like a rolling stone

last night my friend laura and i drove down to my parents. mom and dad had two extra tickets to see willie nelson, john mellencamp, and bob dylan live at the storm stadium in lake elsinore. i've seen dylan once before and knew what to expect, as far as the other two performers i had no expectations. willie nelson played first and his voice sounded amazing, his son was playing with him and his sister came out twice to play piano. john mellencamp played next and was incredible, by far my favorite performance of the night. he played mostly the hits (i didn't realize how much mellencamp i knew) and one or two new songs. the only disappointment was that he didn't play jack and diane. dylan played last and while it is thrilling seeing him, the band overwhelmed his voice and he has arranged his old songs to the point of not being recognizable. we all agreed his best song was all along the watchtower. such a great evening, even in the sweltering heat (that's what frozen margaritas are for, right?).

project-ing

  • Aug. 12th, 2009 at 11:23 AM
i collect a lot of online tutorials, there is a special folder in my "favorites" box devoted to online tutorials. over the past year i have printed scores of projects and they have been wholly disorganized and strewn about my sewing supplies. i've had the idea of making a "project book" for some time and monday night i made it a reality. with a stack of some plastic protective sheets and a 2 1/2" thick binder i created a nice no-fuss way to organize and store project ideas. on the inside the plastic sheets have the full instructions and any pattern pieces i've created and the interior pockets allow me to include thinner store bought patterns. i also devoted a plastic sheet to the sewing examples i created in my sewing class, this way i can have a handy reference to something like how to sew french seams.

i've been wanting to attempt more embroidery projects lately. my friend laura gave me some darling mermaid patterns, in addition i bought a ton of patterns at the quilt show earlier this year. i had mentioned this to my mom and she kindly bought me some flour sack towels to embroider on. last night i washed them all and this morning i found a post on sew, mama, sew about doing a "sew-along sampler", what could be more perfect?!?!

lastly, i found this picture on my friend laura's computer and think it's too funny and random. i think it was taken last summer, where i have no idea. i miss my little bother, even if he does bite.

the christmas canoe

  • Aug. 7th, 2009 at 12:12 PM
a few years ago, while my friend andrea and i were living together, we were pulling out christmas decorations and getting ready to trim the tree. andrea was looking through my small collection of ornaments and came across a few "interesting" ones that had been given to me (i.e. an american flag tassle thing) one in particular caught her attention, the "christmas canoe". i must say, it is one of the more random ornaments that's been given to me, but since andrea found it so amusing i let her have it. today she sent me an e-mail with the following picture attached. i'm so happy to see that the "christmas canoe" has a home!

other happy news, my dearest friend laura is back from her road trip, sadly she moves to san francisco on the 14th. this next week i'll be cramming in as much laura time as i can before she leaves.

i posted a bunch of things on ebay last night in preparation for my may 1st move. it's really hard moving twice in less than a year, however, i'm finding this time around i'm much more willing and open to parting with items. i'm very excited about the prospect of my own place, to decorate and change and keep clean in whatever way i choose. it will be glorious. but when to start packing??? and how to time selling furniture pieces???

any advice is welcome.

Art, with a capital "a"

  • Mar. 27th, 2008 at 8:27 AM
per my favorite design blog design*sponge, i discovered this amazing project called 20x200. it's a jen beckman project and every week 2 new pieces by 2 different up and coming artists are posted. the price for the pieces vary by the size; $20 for an 8.5"x11", $200 for a 17"x22", and $2000 for a 30"x40" piece. i've been checking the site regularly and finally came across a piece i really wanted and immediately bought it (for $20 of course). i think this is such a fantastic idea/project and perfect for anyone who wants to start collecting art but cant quite afford the high price tags.

in other news, after only living in LA for about 8 months, i'm moving back down to long beach! i wont go into details and i have a lot of mixed feelings, but i'm definitely looking at the bright sides.
