pictures of the latest craftiness

  • Sep. 16th, 2009 at 10:57 AM
here are the pictures of the projects i mentioned in my last post, enjoy!

{laura's towel, i'll use this fabric scrap to make a loop}

{label for emilee's quilt, the mermaid pattern is from sublime stitching, i tried to mimic the colors in the fabric}

{squares for the next quilt top}

and a sneak peek into my new apartment...
i'm moving in with my friend kristina; this is a view from the kitchen to the living room. most of the furniture will be gone and the nook you see in the foreground will be my sewing area.
i'm very excited!

nesting

  • Aug. 19th, 2009 at 11:15 AM
last night i completed the first corner of my towel embroidery project. the lines are a all a bit wonky, but i think that adds to the charm, right? i'm very pleased with how my stitches look, the towels had an easy grid to follow which allowed me to keep an evenness to the stitches. i'll start the opposite corner tonight, the colors will be brighter and should add a nice contrast. after all that, add a loop from some scrap fabric and i should be done!

the next project i need to return to is emilee's quilt! i want to complete it by her birthday (mid september), and really only need to piece together the back and then quilt it. it feels good to be making things again.

hand-sewn

  • Aug. 17th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
i finally started a new project! i love embroidering for the simple joy of having a project that is so portable and, unlike knitting, it's light and perfect for warm summer nights. i'm using the towels my mom bought me, a pattern i purchased from sew bettie's shop, and embroidery floss from a bag of goodies my grandma sent me. i'm loving the simplicty of the back-stitch on the white background. in one corner the dolls will be green, blue, purple and in the opposite corner they'll be red, orange and yellow.

{nesting dolls}

here's a glimpse of the goodies my grandma sent me. the fabric on the carrier is not quite me, i think i'll whip up a new cover. the carrier inculded; a sewing book, books on candlewicking, a ton of embroidery floss, buttons, elastic, and various little tools. i've also rounded up my various embroidery patterns, i think most gifts this christmas will feature something embroidered.

UFO sightings

  • Aug. 10th, 2009 at 9:14 AM
i have found mulitiple UFO's (unfinished objects) around my room. i think it's partly to do with the long hot summer days where i'd rather be outside or with friends than hunched over my sewing machine. i also think the UFO's are related to my lack of a "craft space", if i didn't have to set up and put away my sewing machine everytime i wanted to work, i'd be a lot more productive. oh well, it all gets finished eventually, right?

easter preparations

  • Apr. 6th, 2009 at 6:59 AM
sunday morning, after a very fun and relaxing weekend, i drove down to my parents house and started some of the sewing projects i mentioned in my last post. they are all WIP's (works in progress) but, i'm very happy with them so far.

here are the "baskets"; i plan on finishing the edges with some bias strips and the handle will either be out of canvas or a fabric that coordinates with the baskets.

these were easy to make, but i wasn't terribly happy with how the double-sided interfacing went in and i had to deviate from the pattern a bit.

also, here's one of the easter egg's with a pocket. it looks a bit wonky because it's stuffed with tissues (i left the stuffing at home).  i also sewed this on the machine, i think i'll sew the other ones by hand.

weekend sewing

  • Mar. 12th, 2009 at 12:50 PM
i'm feeling inspired this weekend to get some serious crafting done, so i'm sharing some of my project ideas.

my friend veronica's birthday is here again (i made her a bag last year) and this year i plan on making her this very cute ipod/camera cozy (via sew, mama, sew) with a matching tote bag.

and these super delicious looking cookies from the blog a friend to knit with.

next on my to-sew list is making a little gift for my friend laura. she just started a sewing class, so for a little encouragement (and because i plan on making myself one) i'm making this adorable pin cushion (it was featured on etsy's how-to tuesdays).

lastly, i brought my sculpture project home to finish over the weekend, there is so much detail on the purse, it's all a bit daunting.
le sigh, should be a nice weekend.

i wants to goes there!

  • Mar. 5th, 2009 at 9:44 AM
my friend andrea sent me a link to a place that looks a-m-a-z-i-n-g. it's called the urban craft center, the center offers an amazing array of classes and you can rent studio space to get your crafting done. t.u.c.c. is located on main street in santa monica and is under 20 minutes from my work and just a few minutes from campus. hopefully, i can check it out soon!

in other news, i'm beat! between work and school and the gym, i'm worn down.
maybe in a good way? my weeknight going out routine has definitely been put on hold.
maybe i'll make this duvet cover from amy butler to make my sleep a little more sound.

sew much fun

  • Feb. 23rd, 2009 at 10:30 AM

sunday was a very productive day for me, granted i slept in, but i was still able to accomplish so much: i went to the art supply warehouse to buy supplies for my sculpture class, i finally gathered up all my giveaway clothes and got them out of my room, i did laundry for the week, and then i sewed to my heart's content while i watched an america's next top model marathon and the academy awards.

after buying my tools for sculpting, i decided i should have a tool roll. i worked out the dimensions i would need the roll to be and assembeled it based on the crayon rolls i made for the kids at christmas. some of the lines are a little wonky, but all in all i'm very proud.

next i made a yoga mat bag, i used the pattern/instructions from my favorite sewing book lotta jansdotter's simple sewing. this sewed up very fast, and i love this fabric, it's a joel dewberry print in upholstery weight cotton. i'll take a picture in more natural light so you can see just how beautiful and vibrant it is. the strap is a bit long, so i may shorten it up an inch or two, otherwise it's perfect.

you can see it also has a pocket so i dont have to take my purse with me!

next i moved on to an apron pattern (also from lotta's book) i only made it though cutting the fabric before deciding i'd wait and finish it next weekend. but here's a look at the start. the fabric is from amy butler's lotus collection, the apron is supposed to be reversable and i was going to use both of these fabrics, but now i think i'll just use the lotus for one side and a nice linen for the other. i'm making this arpon so i dont dirty up my clothes during sculpture.

finally, i continued work on emilee's quilt, only two more squares to sew, and then i can start piecing it together. like i said, a very productive sunday!

ooh la la

  • Jan. 22nd, 2009 at 7:23 AM

i saw this post yesterday on design*sponge, and immediately felt inspired to create a lunch tote of my own. however, i have a mini fridge at my office to myself, so a lunch tote isn't really necessary... but that doesn't mean those near and dear to me can't benefit (jasmine?).

i've already decided to change a few things; i'll use mini pockets instead of the elastic, snaps instead of buttons, and, instead of deconstructing a tote bag, i'll just make my own. i'm starting to feel my sewing machine calling my name again, i'm sure i'll be crafting up a storm in no time. and, perhaps, opening an etsy shop???

the best of the west

i went with my aunt jamie to the 2009 quilt show in ontario, and i think we both left feeling very inspired to get crafting. i bought quite a few trims and buttons, and even some darling embroidery patterns, plus some of the vendors gave away free quilt patterns. i was overwhelmed by all the fabric, machines and goodies, but still had an amazing time, it was also exciting to see some of the fabrics i stare at for hours online in person.
here are some pictures of the quilts that were submitted for ribbons.

i loved anything with animal themes.

american gothic, the quilt.

orange was a very popular color in a lot of the quilts.

again, i love the animal themes.

the thread detail on the quilts was really amazing. most of the these were quilted on machines, not by hand.

aunt jamie's favorite quilt.

i loved the birds and details on this quilt too.

this quilt was beautiful in person, it almost glowed.

soon i'll be sharing my new projects, i'm very excited!

Happy Martin Luther King day, and Happy Inauguration Eve!!

to do, to make

  • Jan. 13th, 2009 at 1:15 PM
i feel very inspired to create a tote bag full of pockets and pouches for my knitting supplies and projects. one of my favorite bloggers/etsy sellers made these little pouches and i think they are really cute, and would be simple to recreate for myself.

my friend robin bought me a bunch of yarn and crochet hooks for christmas, so now as soon as i can find an instructor and a good book i'll add crochet to my lists of crafts.

oh the cuteness!!!

i started embroidering the girl's bags. i'm pretty happy with the results so far, especially the font i chose. the process was simple, i chose the "split stitch" and made my templates by enlarging text in word and cutting out the the letter with an exacto knife.

the begining:

the finished look:

tres awesome!

spoiler alert!

the question that has been plaguing me the last few weeks (what crafty thing can i make for the gentlemen in my life??) has been answered!!!

mom don't look!!!!!

dare i?

  • Oct. 23rd, 2008 at 7:49 AM
i'm feeling very inspired  for this holiday season's gift giving. thanks to my sewing lessons last semester and my addiction to craft blogs i think i'm going to attempt the dare to make it challenge at craftstylish. i'm realizing this is a slightly impossible task with people like my cousin nick and for the payne side gift exchange. however, i'm more or less aiming for 75% of my gifts to be hand made. i'm thinking of things like these fabric bowls, these felted nesting bowls, lots of embroidery, and so much more.
in other news, my invite came through from ravelry and i think my first project will be sweater vest, its really cute and you knit it on circular needles. i still have to post pictures of my newest creations (a quick pair of fingerless gloves and scarflet).
