addicted

  • Aug. 26th, 2009 at 11:15 AM
my dear readers, i fear i have to confess something, i have a serious addiction to art prints. i can not get enough. i have so many websites saved in my favorites folders devoted to prints. i don't know where this comes from. as long as i can remember i've collected postcards and prints and covered every inch of wall surface available to me.
i dont think i can stop.
that said, i thought i'd share some of the prints i've been lusting after....

lego architecture

  • Jul. 28th, 2009 at 8:56 AM

i first read about lego's architecture collection on curbly a few months back and have been desiring one of the sets ever since. i really want Falling Water from the Frank Lloyd Wright collection, but its not available yet.

{i also would love to attempt this}

i'm also feeling inspired by the book/new movie julie and julia, i think for the month of august i will attempt to work on a project (sewing, knitting, lino cutting, embroidery, etc) everday.
it may be an overly ambitious undertaking, so we'll see....

stoned

slowly but surely i'm chiseling away at my stone. it's really harder than it looks (the process not the stone) and i'm continually having to rotate the piece focusing on all sides, never working one side more than the others. we'll see how things go!

we had our critique last night in my scupture class. now, i don't want to brag, but i really did have one of the best pieces in the class. the critique went really well, a lot of the students were impressed and our instructor gave me some great criticism. overall, i think i'm going to get an A+ (or at least i'm hoping).
now on to the next project, an abstract/non-objective stone sculpture. i'm using an alabaster stone called "angel fire", the shape i've come up with is i diamond with opposing concave circles.

my stone (i wet it to give an idea of how the color will look once polished)

a rough clay mock-up of the shape i'm going for

we'll see how things go, i'm a bit nervous, i know the stone wont be as forgiving as the clay.

a little of this, a little of that

last night we celebrated my new friend serena's birthday. i didn't remember till the last minute, so i quickly knitted a pair of these fingerless gloves. this is the present wrapped, i made the tag with some paper i've had forever from a template i found on domino.

also, a few months ago i found a link to this really cool art concept. the idea is that you get collaborators to purchase the books and the books are then used to create sculptures. once the show was over and the pieces were unstacked, the book you purchased is mailed to you.
so a week or so ago i received my book... if you look on the website's list of collaborators you'll even see my name!

just before i was ready to leave work yesterday my dear friend robin called. he, along with my best friend laura and new friend nick were driving up to la to take advantage of LACMA's free after 5pm offer. we all met up at the street lamp installation and headed to the BCAM building. sadly, the entire second floor of BCAM was closed for a new installation, so we wandered to the ahmanson building. there was a beautiful black and white photography exhibit full of pieces i've only seen in textbooks. also, there was a room devoted to one persons collection of images of saint fabiola, the collection has more than 300 pieces and is really worth visiting. i need to visit again soon to see the vanity fair show!

Art, with a capital "a"

  • Mar. 27th, 2008 at 8:27 AM
per my favorite design blog design*sponge, i discovered this amazing project called 20x200. it's a jen beckman project and every week 2 new pieces by 2 different up and coming artists are posted. the price for the pieces vary by the size; $20 for an 8.5"x11", $200 for a 17"x22", and $2000 for a 30"x40" piece. i've been checking the site regularly and finally came across a piece i really wanted and immediately bought it (for $20 of course). i think this is such a fantastic idea/project and perfect for anyone who wants to start collecting art but cant quite afford the high price tags.

in other news, after only living in LA for about 8 months, i'm moving back down to long beach! i wont go into details and i have a lot of mixed feelings, but i'm definitely looking at the bright sides.
